Pumpkins, apples, changing leaves, cool weather, salted caramel mochas, yes,…Fall is definitely here, at least in the Midwest. And you know how I love the Fall!
This weekend was my family’s annual trip to the apple orchard in Wisconsin. Thankfully our selected orchard had enough quality apples to choose from. Many, many other orchards in the greater Chicago area were either still closed or not allowing “u-pick” apples – which quite honestly takes all of the fun out of apple picking.
When we pulled into the orchard, a woman stopped us to ask if we’d like a 1/4 bushel, to which my husband replied, “that’s a peck, right?”. Although the woman was surprised at my husband’s conversion knowledge, I merely shook my head and casually said, “we’re apple picking veterans, ma’am.”
The day was a gorgeous 62 degrees and sunny, ideal weather for spending time in an orchard, picking Gala, McIntosh, and Blondie’s by hand, and snapping a few pics of the kids racing up and down the tree aisles.
An hour later with a peck of apples in hand, we waited in line for some of the best donuts I’ve every tasted. Warm and slightly crunchy, these gems were well on their way to converting a non-donut lover into a full-fledged fan. Thankfully, we only visit the orchard once a year.
And to make our Fall day complete – we gathered for a little Charlie Brown. Despite what my husband believes…..It’s the Great Pumpkin never gets old…..even when you start watching it in September.
