What is the best way to attract tourists to your city? According to VisitOslo, the trick is to tell them to stay away.
In a new, super low-key commercial full of dry humor, an Oslo native tells would-be Oslo travelers there’s really no reason to visit the city. I mean, who would want to go to this seaside city where locals swim in clean “city” water, have accessible cultural attractions like the Munch Museum, a cool fortress and palace, and see local royalty on the street? And is it even a city if you can walk right into a fancy restaurant in heart of downtown Oslo and get a table within a few seconds? And why is everything so walkable?
All humor aside, the commercial does an incredible job drawing viewers in with reverse psychology leaving them with more than subtle curiosity to learn about the city and an urge to prove the commercial wrong. It’s the ultimate backhanded compliment.
Having been to Oslo this time last year, I can honestly say that it offers something for everyone. But there’s a catch. If you’re looking for a super pretentious, fast-paced, see-and-be-seen type of atmosphere, keep looking. Even with its abundance of culture, history, great food, and more, Oslo gives off uber low-key, minimalist vibes. This may be unusual for a country’s capital, but honestly, it’s what you would expect from one of the largest cities in Scandinavia and the home of all things Hygge.
But for someone who has actually been to Oslo, I have to wonder, does it really have what it takes to become a must-see travel destination? Will travelers be curious enough about Oslo to add it to their European travel itinerary? After this commercial, I’m betting yes.
