Every September, France comes back into focus overnight. It’s called la rentrée, and the country takes it seriously.
What La Rentrée Actually Is
Rentrée means “return.” Technically it refers to school starting back up after summer. But the word covers more than school: la rentrée politique, when government resumes its work; la rentrée littéraire, the fall publishing rush when hundreds of new novels drop at once; a business rentrée, a fashion rentrée. The shared idea across the country that says…summer was for holidaying, now it’s time to get serious again. The French treat it as a bigger reset than January 1, because it’s tied to something real: cooler air, changing light, an actual shift in rhythm, not a date on a calendar.
Why It Resonates With Me Right Now
My youngest left for college last month. For the first time in over two decades, September doesn’t mean school supply lists or first-day photos (although I did get one of those!) No rentrée scolaire waiting for me…and the first quiet week of an empty house left me a little sad.
But la rentrée as a concept was never really about the school calendar. It’s permission to reset…pick up what you’d postponed, take the trip, sign up for the class, do something for you.
How to Borrow This, Wherever You Are
Pick your own date and treat it like one. Labor Day, the first cool morning…whatever marks the shift for you. And then…
Buy the notebook. Remember your own college years when you couldn’t wait to buy a new planner? The French stock up on a new agenda/planner every fall, and it isn’t just to manage their children’s schedules. A fresh, unmarked page makes the reset tangible.
Do a wardrobe edit. Take inventory of what you have, repair or tailor what’s worth keeping, and be thoughtful about what earns a spot for fall. One amazing piece beats ten impulse or fast-fashion ones.
Reclaim one hour a day for something creative or inspiring. A class, a walk, writing …put it on your new fancy calendar at a set time, and stick to your new fun schedule.
Keep it serious without making it difficult. No need to put the traditional ”new year, new me” pressure on yourself. Summer’s over. Make this the time to be a little more purposeful. That’s it.
La rentrée offers something better than a resolution. It’s a fun reset to return to every year, whether or not anyone in the house still needs a new backpack.
Ciao!
