I’m saying goodbye to my oldest today as he boards a plane to Madrid for a 6-week study abroad program.
While he’s been to Europe several times before, this is his first solo trip abroad, and the longest he’s ever been out of the country, (even longer than his travel-obsessed mom).
I have mixed emotions to say the least.
On one hand, I’m so excited for him and all that he will experience – the culture, the food, the people, and the friends I hope he makes along the way.
On the other hand, I want to buy a ticket and secretly go with him, to experience everything with him….to see it through his eyes, and not just in the limited photos and texts that I’ll receive from afar.
I adore that he loves to travel and that this has been his dream for several years. I know just how he feels, as I was in his shoes once many years ago. I just couldn’t wait to travel the world, but a study abroad program was not possible at the time.
I’m thankful that my husband and I are in a place in life where we can afford our son this opportunity- an opportunity for him to explore and learn – all on his own. I know he’s ready, but I am not.
And in this moment, when I hug him tight one more time before he enters the airport, I can’t help but think of the Pixar movie UP, where the characters had amazing adventures, shared experiences, helped each other through difficult times, and made lasting friendships.
Life is not a movie, but in this case, I wish it could be. I wish it was a movie where a little boy develops a love for travel from his mom, grows up, spends a summer in Spain and has incredible adventures that he will remember and talk about for the rest of his life, but above all, returns safely to his family who waited behind.
And to my son, remember ….Adventure is out there…be curious, be bold, be kind, be safe, and, most of all, be back soon.
Love,
Mom
