On my first trip to Italy a few years back, I had the opportunity to spend 4 days in the Amalfi Coast, specifically in the little seaside village of Positano.
Although I had researched the little town somewhat, I mostly picked Positano as a destination based on recommendations from two well-traveled friends. The friends, who did not know each other, could not stop raving about it…from the food, to the people, to the atmosphere and definitely its proximity to other Amalfi destinations. They assured me that Positano would not disappoint and wow, they were right!
When I arrived in Positano, everything I researched or was told about the village paled in comparison to actually seeing it with my own eyes. Every expectation was exceeded in every way. I was instantly entranced by this magical place and could easily argue how this place is one of, if not the prettiest of all villages to visit in Italy. The feeling of being in Positano was a feeling that can’t be obtained from just seeing photos or reading guidebooks. It can only be experienced by actually visiting the coastal gem, and can only be truly shared with others who have had the same amazing opportunity to visit.
I had considered myself quite a traveler up to this point, but Positano instantly put my previous travels into perspective. I was mesmerized by everything in this fairytale-like place – the winding cobblestone streets leading to many secret shops and cafes; the bustling of store and restaurant owners busy serving customers; the salty air that engulfed the mountains; and the vibrantly colored hotel fronts that provide a constant allure for tourists and locals alike. And of course, who wouldn’t love the unparalleled food and wine that all of Italy is known for?
I visited several other villages on the same trip including Amalfi, Ravello, and the Island of Capri, each offering its own beautiful scenery and unique ambience. However, nothing compared to the charm and romance of Positano.
If you are planning a trip to the Amalfi coast, put Positano at the top of your list! And if you are looking for other beautiful Italian villages, you can check out these top 31 Italian villages here.
