I’ve already established my new-ish infatuation with Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. And one of the reasons the Island is so easy to fall in love with is the endearing island neighborhoods, or plantations. Each of the 11 primary plantations offers its own personality, not to mention, restaurants, shopping, activities and a variety of accommodations, including seaside resorts.
The three times we stayed on the Island we were fortunate to stay at a charming, family-oriented resort – Sonesta Resort of Hilton Head Island. Prior to traveling to HHI, I had never heard of the Sonesta hotel brand – I was partial to Marriott, Hyatt and the Four Seasons. However, after being introduced to Sonesta, I would definitely entertain the idea of trying the brand in other areas.
And let me tell you why…
3 Reasons to Return to Sonesta Resort of Hilton Head Island
First Impressions – Upon arriving at Sonesta and walking through the grounds, I had the strong feeling of stepping back in time to a resort of yesteryear; not because the resort was old, but rather the resort felt like what beach resorts used to feel like growing up (and what I would read about in books) – a laid back, natural feel; clean and tasteful, but not over the top decor and room accommodations; and activities to suit just about any age and preference.
Amenities – The resort includes two pools, including one with zero entry, a hot tub, gas fire pits, ping pong, onsite restaurants, coffee shop, gift shop, hammocks, cabanas and more. It also offers bike and beach activity rentals onsite which is incredibly convenient. And, when we’re not in the middle of a pandemic, there are other activities like kids club, yoga, etc to keep you and your family busy. Side Note – Given that most of these activities are geared toward daylight hours and families, those looking for a party atmosphere or a lot of evening festivities may find the resort a bit too “sleepy”. However, it’s perfect for families, couples or individuals who just want to relax in the sun and read a book without being interrupted by large touristy crowds.
Location, Location, Location – But the piece de resistance of this resort is its location. The resort is tucked away, almost hidden, in the quiet and quaint Shipyard Plantation on prime beach/oceanfront property. And speaking of the beach…the resort’s beach is AMAZING and goes on for miles and miles! In fact, the best thing about this beach is that whether the tide is in or out, the beach provides plenty of sand and space to accommodate even larger crowds. It is also seriously clean (or at least it was clean whenever I was there), while being the perfect proximity to the popular Coligny Beach – just close enough to travel there via bike for all of your shopping and dining needs, but far enough away to keep the tourist crowds to a minimum.
I fully recognize that Sonesta is not the only beachfront resort or property on the Island. And that’s really the beauty of the Island itself- there are so many accommodations that offer incredible views, access to beaches, endless activities and more, that it really doesn’t matter which you choose. The most important thing to remember is just find a way to get to Hilton Head, for once you do, the Island will take care of the rest.
Ciao!
