As the saying goes…a picture is worth a thousand words. If that’s the case, how many words is a selfie worth?
Yes, selfies can be annoying, especially to the people who are not in them. They can also be down right dangerous if you’re not paying attention to your surroundings.
Yet, selfies also allow us to capture our exact feeling, in a specific moment, in a precise place and time, allowing us to etch the memory in a photo (and hopefully our minds) forever. It’s hard to replace that.
I’ve taken plenty of selfies as a blogger – in Paris, Rome, London, and more. But one of my favorite selfies was taken in place not too far from where in live in downtown Chicago. Nearly six years ago, the Cubs were on their way to winning their first World Series in over 100 years. I was fortunate enough to attend game five of the series held at Wrigley Field.
My family and I spent many, many hours at the field on that day, wanting to arrive early and experience all of the festivities. Little did we know that 3.5 hours later, we would be celebrating a huge Cubbie win with what seemed like a million of our closest friends. I can still here the cheering “Go Cubs, Go!”, that echoed for miles and miles. And, at that moment through a well-timed, albeit blurry nighttime selfie, I captured my feelings of pure joy, excitement…..and wonder that I could be a part of such a historic occasion.
Although we didn’t arrive home until the wee hours of morning (on a work/school night no less), making a once-in-a-lifetime memory was entirely worth it. Oh, the selfie was to totally worth it too!
