As Jamie Cat Callan recently indicated, French women know that being smart is sexy. Being the Francophile that I am, I too am attempting to take my intellect and, hence, sexiness up a notch in 2011. And how shall I do this?
I am joining my first ever book club. For years, I have contemplated joining the small book club, whose membership includes four other women around my age. Once a month they meet at a coffee shop or restaurant and start with a quick chat over the current novel, followed by a little noshing and either wine or coffee drinking.
I’ve hesitated joining the book club due to several reasons, including:
- The time it takes to actually read a book – I read/write/analyze all day at work so reading really isn’t “leisure” to me, even if it is fiction.
- The time and commitment it takes to meet with the book club, not to mention, sounding intelligent while discussing the actual book
- The expense of buying a book from the store or online
After much thought, I finally convinced myself that book club was time and money worth spending. If I could find time to write/blog, then I could find time to read a book chapter. If I could find time to run out to Starbucks, then I could find time to meet with the girls. As for expense, I was able to get the first book, The Help, from my local library, albeit in large type. I only hope subsequent books are this light on my new Coach wallet.
And so, to all of my fellow book clubbers out there – here’s to being smarter and sexier in the New Year!
