Bistro Chic, Hawaii Bound

Ten years ago this week, I was in Maui, Hawaii, enjoying every minute of my honeymoon at the Four Seasons Wailea. It’s hard to explain how it feels to stay at a Four Seasons, especially one that is thought to be the best in Hawaii. Let’s just put it this way, once you’ve stayed at the Four Seasons Wailea, you will be forever spoiled, and spend countless hours wishing you could go back one more time.

I am very happy to announce that all of the wishing does work, for in just 3 weeks, I will be headed back to Maui to stay at the Four Seasons. Although I will be spending nearly 2 weeks total in Hawaii (mostly for work), my sights are set on the last few days of my trip, where I will soak in the sun in a private cabana in the serenity, adults-only pool – a new feature since I was last there – complete with a swim up bar!

Stay tuned for details on my very Bistro Chic Hawaiian Adventure, where I plan to indulge in every luxurious amenity, including…

  1. Having breakfast on the lanai
  2. Enjoying live Hawaiian music
  3. Waking up to the smell of fresh orchids
  4. Falling asleep to the sound of ocean waves
  5. Drinking anything from a pineapple while sitting by the pool
Aloha!

Pinterest: Daily Inspiration from France

If you’re ever in need of some quick inspiration or just something to make you smile, check out Pinterest, a virtual pinboard where people “pin up” amazing photos of any from gourmet food, fashion, pets, and kids. You can search for just about anything too – and when you do, expect to see a fantastic array of photos and graphics that you can “repin”, ie. show your support/liking for.

I could seriously spend ALL day on this site! Check out what I’m searching for today…..

Quite an assortment of French folly, wouldn’t you agree? What are you searching for today?

My European Staycation: French Market Days

Paris, Provence, Marseilles…ahhh…France.

Destination #2 on my European staycation was a trip to France via Chicago’s Cantigny Park (north of Chicago actually) French Market Days. And what says European staycation better than a stroll around a French open air market?

Although nothing can beat a true French market à la Française, Cantigny does a fine job an incorporating many elements of a Paris/French market, including:

  • Locally grown vegetables and cheeses
  • Pastries from a local patisserie
  • French wares for sale
  • Mime and stilt walker
Who doesn’t love a good old-fashioned French Mime?
Not to mention lovely French things….
And who is that French girl? Oui oui, why it is me!
And where will Bistro Chic’s European staycation take her next? Follow the path and see! Ciao!

My European Staycation: Tea at the Drake Hotel

In keeping with my new goal of having a European staycation in August, I made my way to “England” this weekend via afternoon tea at the Drake Hotel in downtown Chicago. As many of you know in reading my posts, I love to take afternoon tea, whether it is in my own house or in another country. In fact, I was once quite a connoisseur of afternoon tea – having experienced it on several occasions in England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland.

This is my second time having tea at the Drake and I must admit, I remember the first time being slightly better. Although the service was exceptional and the presentation was fantastic, the food – particularly the very small sandwiches – was underwhelming. However, here’s what I did like about the Drake’s version of afternoon tea:

5 Things I Liked about Afternoon Tea at the Drake

  1. The Harpist – a beautiful addition to the stunning lobby
  2. The Tea – they serve Harney and Sons tea – one of my favorites, particularly English Breakfast
  3. The Scone – this is not your typical scone from Starbucks or Panera, but rather a very close resemblence to the biscuit-like scones in the UK
  4. The Bathroom – one of the most beautiful bathrooms I’ve seen in a hotel – and I’ve seen my fair share!
  5. The Devonshire Cream – Probably only the second time I’ve had it outside of England! It was quite good, although, tea and its accompaniments never seem quite as good outside of the UK.
Next stop on my European Staycation? France! Want to take your own European staycation? Here are a few European staycation ideas to get you started.

Finding Europe in My Own Backyard

In my previous post, I shared with you several ways that you could have your very own European-themed staycation, no matter where you live.

While writing that post, I realized that there are still several experiences I wanted to add to my summer to-do list. And, it just so happens that these experiences take me to England, France, and the Mediterranean – at least in my dreams!

Here are just a few European-themed experiences I have planned for the rest of the summer:

England

  • Enjoying afternoon tea at the Drake Hotel in downtown Chicago – which I will be doing this Saturday!
  • Going to the Bristol Renaissance Faire – complete with knights, knaves, Queen Elizabeth I, and Robin Hood
France
  • Attending French Connection Days – a place to experience all things France, including macrons, Madeleine, and a miniature Eiffel Tower
  • Watching Midnight in Paris – a movie I’ve been wanting to see all summer
  • Strolling around a Farmer’s Market for fresh fruit, cheese, and flowers
Mediterranean
  • Attending the Gipsy Kings Concert at Ravinia – a fantastic Spanish/French group – Gitana music at its best
  • Dining at the Purple Pig (done!) – a lovely little Mediterranean/tapas cafe on Michigan Ave. in Chicago
Join me throughout the month of August to see my adventures traveling around Europe, right in my own backyard.
Ciao!
