Dining Al Fresco in San Antonio

I love dining al fresco, both in the sunshine and under the stars. Dining in an outdoor cafe or bistro somehow enhances the whole dining experience. And, from the food to the wine, it makes me feel a little more European. Last night, while in San Antonio in the sweltering 100 degree weather, I opted to do just this.

San Antonio Riverwalk

San Antonio Riverwalk

Take Me To The Drainage Ditch?

Now, I have never been to San Antonio so I had never seen the famous Riverwalk until last night. I had seen pictures and read reviews of other travelers and was very excited to dine by this famous site. But then, after conversing with a few locals, I became a little disheartened. They claimed that the food on the Riverwalk was mediocre at best and that the river was nothing more than a drainage ditch. They also said that San Antonio was all about the Mexican food and if we didn’t eat at a Mexican restaurant, it was pretty much a crap shoot at what kind of food quality we would get.

My colleague and decided to take our chances and head to the Riverwalk on our last night in SA. After driving in circles for about 20 minutes, I finally realized that the Italian restaurant we had intended to eat at was actually inside of a hotel on the Riverwalk – great! We pulled into the Westin Riverwalk, valeted the car, proceeded to the Zocco restaurant that was downstairs.

Two Glasses of Ice, Please!

The restaurant was a little dark but rather trendy. I’m sure it was full of either tourists or hotel patrons. When the hostess seated us, we had the option of sitting inside in the nice cool airconditioned main restaurant or outside on the Riverwalk patio, underneath the trees and the stars. For my colleague and I, there was no question that we wanted to experience first hand all of the Riverwalk’s glory. We were seated outside under an umbrella and the hostess immediately poured us two HUGE glasses of ice water. That should have been my first clue!

Holy Eggplant!

To start, we ordered the crostini with eggplant puree with goat cheese crumbles. It was amazing! I would have posted a photo of the dish but I ate it too fast! No really, my pictures were turning out all dark and fuzzy for some reason. For my entree, I ordered the pasta pomodoro, which was also quite lovely.

Hot, Hot, Hot

The only real problem we had, other than getting lost a few times, was the intense, stifling heat. It’s kind of difficult to fully enjoy your food when you have  hard time breathing and when you’re sweating like crazy. Haven’t they ever heard of an outdoor fan?

But, we somehow managed to get past the heat and enjoy our al fresco meal on the Riverwalk. The setting was actually very quaint and had great ambience. As the evening progressed, more and more lights came on and every few minutes we’d see a tour boat driving a load of tourists through the water. Somehow, this made the al fresco dining experience complete and well worthwhile. All we were missing was a little music. Hmm….maybe next time.

So Long San Antonio

So, now I’m headed home. I have to admit, I’m not sad to leave San Antonio. Riverwalk food was better than I thought and the river itself offers more ambience than a drainage ditch. It was a nice mini-break for 3 days (especially on someone else’s dime!). But, for a Northern girl, it’s just too dang hot!

Ciao!

Travel Chic Essentials for Your Carry On Luggage

Hello all. I am writing this post from a business trip! Yes, I am currently in San Antonio and it is hot, hot, hot! I left for the airport this morning at 5:45 AM and when I arrived at the airport, guess what I had for breakfast?

Yeah! A business expensed breakfast at Starbucks!

Yeah! A business expensed breakfast at Starbucks!

That’s right! Starbucks! Hmm…nothing says a business-expensed breakfast quite like a yogurt parfait and a skinny vanilla latte!

Quite the little traveler…

When I first started traveling for business I had major overpacking syndrome, yet I always managed to forget at least one important item (I actually forgot dress shoes one time!) But after a few years of traveling, including a few back-to-back trips, my packing has improved tremendously. I have now developed a system to packing and use packing cubes – which are awesome by the way.

Packing cubes: Very handy for packing for any size trip.

Packing cubes: Very handy for packing for any size trip.

I have also learned what I can and can’t live without – especially concerning my carry on bag. Due to 9/11 travel regulations, everyone is restricted to what he/she can carry on. But, I have managed to establish a travel list of essential carry on items, other than my phone and camera, that can help me get through nearly any layover or other stressful airport situation.

Take a peak at what’s in my carry on for San Antonio:

My carry on essentials...

My carry on essentials...

12 Carry On Essentials to keep you feeling fresh and fabulous (not to mention sane) while traveling….

  1. Pashmina or long scarf – Can double as an accessory or as a thin blanket for a cold airport or airplane. Boy, did I need this today!
  2. Ipod with headphones – For entertainment, but also for those times when you want to avoid talking to the person next to you.
  3. Magazines/book – Magazines are my fave because I have a short attention span when I’m on a plane.
  4. Notepad/pen – For jotting down important reminders, to do’s, or simply ideas for my next blog post.
  5. Snacks – I don’t enjoy eating at airports, but I particularly don’t care for eating on planes. But, you never know when you’re going to be sitting on the runway for 3 hours. Because of all of the packing restrictions, I tend to buy these snacks once I’m through security. I try to eat as healthy as possible, and, at many airports, this is very hard to do. But, I can usually find yogurt, granola, nuts, and fresh whole fruit like bananas, apples, and pears.
  6. Bottled water - A must for traveling! Calorie free, keeps me hydrated, and doesn’t make me have to use the bathroom every ten minutes like soda or juice. I drank two bottles of water before getting on the plane!
  7. Toothbrush/paste – An easy way to refresh yourself on a long trip.
  8. Hand sanitizer – A necessity, especially when you can’t get up from your seat to wash your hands – yuck!
  9. Moist towelettes – These are fantastic to have in your purse or carry on at all times. You never know when you’re going to spill something on yourself or if someone is going to spill something on you.
  10. Light makeup/beauty items – Lipstick, powder, pick, hair clip, that’s all I need
  11. Sunglasses – These are great to have when the sun is shining in the main airplane cabin and you want to take a nap. They are also good for sneaking peaks at other travelers (Ooh, check out that great Coach purse!)
  12. Running shoes – I never go on a trip without them. And, I always pack them in my carry on for fear of my checked luggage being lost or delayed. I mean, you can buy new underwear, socks, and clothes, but it’s very hard to replace a good pair of broken-in running shoes!

Question of the day….What is your most essential carry on item?

Happy Travels Everyone!

Come On, Get Happy

Happy Thursday everyone!

What do Disney World and Denmark have in common? At one point in time, each has been considered the happiest place on Earth.

So, where is the happiest place on Earth?

So, where is the happiest place on Earth?

NORTHERN HAPPINESS

According to a new report released by the Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD), Denmark and Finland are indeed the happiest countries in the world, respectively reporting 90 percent and 86 percent overall life satisfaction. Furthermore, it seems that Scandinavian countries may hold the secret to happiness, with 6 Nordic countries making the top 10 of the happiest places on Earth (the US didn’t even make the top 10).

So what makes these nations so happy? The main reason is the overall economic health of the country, including gross domestic product (GDP) and unemployment rates. For instance, Denmark reported the best economic health with just a 2 percent unemployment rate and a GDP of $68,000 per capita – now that’s being productive!

So, how does your country rank?

  2. Eat avocados: Seriously? Yes, stress depletes vitamin B6, and this green machine is packed with the happy vitamin. I love guacamole so this should be a no-brainer for me.
  3. Take charge of your career: If you’re not happy at work, change the scenery with a desk move or career move.
  4. Do more yoga: Yes! I knew I did yoga for a reason.
  5. Spritz with essential oils: Oils from leaves, flowers, and fruit peels can help balance your mood.
  6. Savor strawberries: Don’t wait for summer to eat these babies- they are packed with vitamin C and can help boost your immune system all year round.
  7. Relax and energize: Take a few minutes out of your hectic schedule to rejuvenate and refresh yourself – take a walk or put your feet up with a good book.
  8. Be mindful: Meditation can help clear the mind and strengthen the soul. Sign me up!

Beauty Products Are Travel Treasures

Bonjour mon amis!

Well, so much for complaining about running in the heat last week. This morning it was 60 degrees when I went out for my daily run. It was a bit chilly and rainy, but quite a nice change from sweating bullets the last few mornings. After my energizing run, I decided to splurge and enjoy a little French pâtisserie – a chocolate chocolate chip muffin.

My rich chocolatey breakfast.

My rich chocolatey breakfast.

OK, so it wasn’t so little and not very French – but it was definitely a pastry. As a show of my strong willpower, I only ate half – ha!

Now, onto the post….

DISHING ON SOAP
As Americans head out for their typical July 4th vacation, many will come home with more than a scorching sunburn. Sadly, a great number of vacationers also will return with cliched travel trinkets like magnets and shot glasses, or worse, a t-shirt that says “I went all the way to Aruba and all I got was this lousy t-shirt.”

Why not bring home a unique memento from your journey?

For nearly 10 years, during my vacation and work travels, I have been collecting individually wrapped bar soaps – most of which are the small hand soap variety. And these soaps aren’t just your run-of-the-mill soaps. They are the luxurious kind with wonderfully clean scents that are almost always wrapped in fancy smancy paper.

A recent article in the London Times notes that beauty products, like hand soaps and shower gels, make some of the best souvenirs. I absolutely agree with this notion!  While on vacation or traveling for work, I always keep my eye out for new and interesting beauty mementos – particularly soaps, hand creams, other personal care items that are made in the local area. And because many of the foreign stores and boutiques cater to tourists, most beauty products can be obtained in small or travel sizes so you don’t have to buy huge vats of shampoo or body scrub.

RAISING THE SOAP BAR

My soap collection is full of bars from several countries around the world. A unique benefit about collecting hand soaps or other beauty souvenirs during my travels is that I actually get to use the soaps and be reminded of the city where I bought them. I have a beautifully packaged citrus soap from Barcelona and a gorgeous Penhaligon lavender soap from a boutique hotel in London. It’s like taking a little bit of England and Spain home with me!

L'Occitane Verbena Hand Soap

L'Occitane Verbena Hand Soap

I also have many luxury soaps obtained during my North American travels, including a lovely oatmeal bar from the Queen Elizabeth Hotel in Montréal and an aloe vera bar from the Brown Palace Hotel and Spa in Denver. But, one of my favorite soaps in my collection is L’Occitane’s shea butter soap with milk – it’s such a refreshingly mild scent. I picked up my first bar nearly 8 years ago while staying at the Four Seasons Hotel in Maui. And, since that trip, I have been enamored with many of L’Occitane’s products, all of which are developed and produced in a little Provençal town in France called Manosque. Aside from shea butter, I also love the verbena soap with its delicious, although quite strong, citrus scent – reminds me of lemons hanging on a tree! I’ve been collecting and using these luxury soaps for so long that it’s hard to go back to normal soap. Hmmm…is there such as a thing as a soap snob?

THE GOOD SOAP

A display of soaps from my travels....

A display of soaps from my travels....

Although I try to use this treasure trove of soaps on a regular basis, I have so many that I’ve put them on display in my bathroom. I also use a select few bars as soap for guests – or as my father would say, I’m putting out the good soap. This extra special touch for guests has resulted in more than one question about the soap’s origin and where my guest could buy additional bars. Just don’t let me catch any stowaways in their suitcases – gotcha!

So, on your next vacation or trip, ditch your standard t-shirt or magnet souvenir. Bring home a luxurious bar of soap – a unique travel treasure that will have you enjoying your vacation for weeks to come!

10 Ideas for a Great Staycation

Good morning friends! It is a gorgeous morning today – so much cooler than it has been for the last week which makes for great running.

I am on vacation this week – woo hoo! But, contrary to what many of you might guess, I’m not headed to Paris or even sunny Florida, I’m staying put. Yes, this will be my first-ever, true Staycation!

Palm trees and paradise

Palm trees and paradise: you will be sorely missed.

A few months ago, when I was deciding what to do for my summer holiday, I came across a story about how the British have embraced the concept of staycations. A recent poll in Britain showed that 60 percent of Britons, or 37 million people, are planning to stay home for vacation this year. That’s double the amount of staycationers as last year.

Taking staycation simply means opting to stay in your own country or even your own home, rather than venturing abroad or out-of-town.  Although it’s not as exotic as I like, a staycation was much more friendly on my budget this year than my typical vacations. I’ve also been traveling quite a bit this year for work, so the urge to travel really hasn’t been that strong lately. At one point, I was actually adverse to traveling – or at least getting on a plane – gasp! I’m even a little glad that I won’t have to worry about paying luggage fees, sitting in the airport for hours because of delays, or waiting in long lines anywhere. Although I will miss the palm trees.

MY STAYCATION HEAVEN

If you like pina coladas...

Pina Colada - On my staycation list!

When contemplating what to do on my staycation, I decided to jot down all of the things I like doing on real vacations:

  • Relaxing by the pool or at the beach
  • Listening to live beach-type music (a la Jimmy Buffet)
  • Exploring historical or cultural sites
  • Going out to eat for breakfast, lunch, and dinner (ie. eating vacation food)
  • Perusing eclectic shops
  • Walking around outside at night
  • Getting a massage or having my nails done
  • Wearing vacation clothes – like sundresses, etc.
  • Taking a drive or walk by the water
  • Enjoying many frozen drinks with little umbrellas
  • Getting up late and taking a nap whenever I want to

Unless I’m traveling to Europe, my vacations usually center around sun, fun, and relaxation. So, nearly all of my vacations have included the activities mentioned above. Although I will have company in town for part of the week, my goal is to try to do a few of these activities in my area or right at home.
