Dining Al Fresco in San Antonio

I love dining al fresco, both in the sunshine and under the stars. Dining in an outdoor cafe or bistro somehow enhances the whole dining experience. And, from the food to the wine, it makes me feel a little more European. Last night, while in San Antonio in the sweltering 100 degree weather, I opted to do just this.

San Antonio Riverwalk

San Antonio Riverwalk

Take Me To The Drainage Ditch?

Now, I have never been to San Antonio so I had never seen the famous Riverwalk until last night. I had seen pictures and read reviews of other travelers and was very excited to dine by this famous site. But then, after conversing with a few locals, I became a little disheartened. They claimed that the food on the Riverwalk was mediocre at best and that the river was nothing more than a drainage ditch. They also said that San Antonio was all about the Mexican food and if we didn’t eat at a Mexican restaurant, it was pretty much a crap shoot at what kind of food quality we would get.

My colleague and decided to take our chances and head to the Riverwalk on our last night in SA. After driving in circles for about 20 minutes, I finally realized that the Italian restaurant we had intended to eat at was actually inside of a hotel on the Riverwalk – great! We pulled into the Westin Riverwalk, valeted the car, proceeded to the Zocco restaurant that was downstairs.

Two Glasses of Ice, Please!

The restaurant was a little dark but rather trendy. I’m sure it was full of either tourists or hotel patrons. When the hostess seated us, we had the option of sitting inside in the nice cool airconditioned main restaurant or outside on the Riverwalk patio, underneath the trees and the stars. For my colleague and I, there was no question that we wanted to experience first hand all of the Riverwalk’s glory. We were seated outside under an umbrella and the hostess immediately poured us two HUGE glasses of ice water. That should have been my first clue!

Holy Eggplant!

To start, we ordered the crostini with eggplant puree with goat cheese crumbles. It was amazing! I would have posted a photo of the dish but I ate it too fast! No really, my pictures were turning out all dark and fuzzy for some reason. For my entree, I ordered the pasta pomodoro, which was also quite lovely.

Hot, Hot, Hot

The only real problem we had, other than getting lost a few times, was the intense, stifling heat. It’s kind of difficult to fully enjoy your food when you have  hard time breathing and when you’re sweating like crazy. Haven’t they ever heard of an outdoor fan?

But, we somehow managed to get past the heat and enjoy our al fresco meal on the Riverwalk. The setting was actually very quaint and had great ambience. As the evening progressed, more and more lights came on and every few minutes we’d see a tour boat driving a load of tourists through the water. Somehow, this made the al fresco dining experience complete and well worthwhile. All we were missing was a little music. Hmm….maybe next time.

So Long San Antonio

So, now I’m headed home. I have to admit, I’m not sad to leave San Antonio. Riverwalk food was better than I thought and the river itself offers more ambience than a drainage ditch. It was a nice mini-break for 3 days (especially on someone else’s dime!). But, for a Northern girl, it’s just too dang hot!

Ciao!

Le Fooding Arrives in the US

The recession has taken its toll on industries and individuals alike. And one industry that has taken a substantial blow is the restaurant industry. But, now, a new French concept may help change that.

I was sitting on the airplane yesterday morning perusing the in-flight magazine when I came across a very cool article that I wanted to share. The article was about France’s popular dining movement called Le Fooding and how it is just now reaching the United States.

What is Le Fooding?

Le Fooding, the popular French dining genre, is headed to the US in the Fall

Like the slow food movement that was all the rage a few years back, Le Fooding is a fairly new concept in Europe, but even newer to the US. Born nearly a decade ago in France, Le Fooding is the art of celebrating the restaurant experience. Think of it as an edgy mix of haute cuisine, trendy hippsters, nouveau art, and a lot of partying, all relished in a casual bistro chic setting.

Shh, It’s a Secret!

Le Fooding - combines art, music, and gourmet food in a bistro chic setting.

Le Fooding creators have tried to keep this concept somewhat exclusive, only letting a relatively small group of priviledged foodies and socialites in on the idea. Chefs hosting Le Fooding events have even gone as far as emailing a secret password that would allow the chosen ones special access to the event. So secretive!

Tradition v. Innovation

But, it really is no secret that the French love (and are maybe a little obsessed) with food. They also greatly respect and savor the art of preparing the food and the act of eating it. But they can also be a bit stuffy about their food, wanting to hold onto traditional preparations rather than thinking out of the (bread) box. So, it is no wonder that when some traditional chefs got whiff of the Le Fooding, they snubbed and even hated the concept.

Le Fooding Movement Heads to New York

Traditional French Chefs finally embrace new Le Fooding concept.

Traditional French Chefs finally embrace new Le Fooding concept.

Now, after 10 years of rising popularity in France, the concept of Le Fooding has expanded. Le Fooding now has its own guidebook, an alternative to the standard Michelin restaurant ratings, a system that many chefs feel do not accurately reflect a restaurant’s true potential. And, the concept of Le Fooding has been showcased in foodie events with some very high profile chefs at the helm – or should I say stove?

And, to top things off, the Le Fooding movement will finally arrive in New York this fall, taking the US by storm. On September 25th and 26th, Le Fooding d’Amour Paris-New York will debut at New York’s P.S.1 in Queens. The event will pair the talents of 6 American chefs with 6 chefs from France.

There’s no telling if the Le Fooding concept will catch on in New York or the US in general. But one thing is for sure, dining out has sure taken a hit during the recession. Maybe Le Fooding is just what the restaurant industry needs to breathe life back into its bruised soul.

Travel Chic Essentials for Your Carry On Luggage

Hello all. I am writing this post from a business trip! Yes, I am currently in San Antonio and it is hot, hot, hot! I left for the airport this morning at 5:45 AM and when I arrived at the airport, guess what I had for breakfast?

Yeah! A business expensed breakfast at Starbucks!

Yeah! A business expensed breakfast at Starbucks!

That’s right! Starbucks! Hmm…nothing says a business-expensed breakfast quite like a yogurt parfait and a skinny vanilla latte!

Quite the little traveler…

When I first started traveling for business I had major overpacking syndrome, yet I always managed to forget at least one important item (I actually forgot dress shoes one time!) But after a few years of traveling, including a few back-to-back trips, my packing has improved tremendously. I have now developed a system to packing and use packing cubes – which are awesome by the way.

Packing cubes: Very handy for packing for any size trip.

Packing cubes: Very handy for packing for any size trip.

I have also learned what I can and can’t live without – especially concerning my carry on bag. Due to 9/11 travel regulations, everyone is restricted to what he/she can carry on. But, I have managed to establish a travel list of essential carry on items, other than my phone and camera, that can help me get through nearly any layover or other stressful airport situation.

Take a peak at what’s in my carry on for San Antonio:

My carry on essentials...

My carry on essentials...

12 Carry On Essentials to keep you feeling fresh and fabulous (not to mention sane) while traveling….

  1. Pashmina or long scarf – Can double as an accessory or as a thin blanket for a cold airport or airplane. Boy, did I need this today!
  2. Ipod with headphones – For entertainment, but also for those times when you want to avoid talking to the person next to you.
  3. Magazines/book – Magazines are my fave because I have a short attention span when I’m on a plane.
  4. Notepad/pen – For jotting down important reminders, to do’s, or simply ideas for my next blog post.
  5. Snacks – I don’t enjoy eating at airports, but I particularly don’t care for eating on planes. But, you never know when you’re going to be sitting on the runway for 3 hours. Because of all of the packing restrictions, I tend to buy these snacks once I’m through security. I try to eat as healthy as possible, and, at many airports, this is very hard to do. But, I can usually find yogurt, granola, nuts, and fresh whole fruit like bananas, apples, and pears.
  6. Bottled water - A must for traveling! Calorie free, keeps me hydrated, and doesn’t make me have to use the bathroom every ten minutes like soda or juice. I drank two bottles of water before getting on the plane!
  7. Toothbrush/paste – An easy way to refresh yourself on a long trip.
  8. Hand sanitizer – A necessity, especially when you can’t get up from your seat to wash your hands – yuck!
  9. Moist towelettes – These are fantastic to have in your purse or carry on at all times. You never know when you’re going to spill something on yourself or if someone is going to spill something on you.
  10. Light makeup/beauty items – Lipstick, powder, pick, hair clip, that’s all I need
  11. Sunglasses – These are great to have when the sun is shining in the main airplane cabin and you want to take a nap. They are also good for sneaking peaks at other travelers (Ooh, check out that great Coach purse!)
  12. Running shoes – I never go on a trip without them. And, I always pack them in my carry on for fear of my checked luggage being lost or delayed. I mean, you can buy new underwear, socks, and clothes, but it’s very hard to replace a good pair of broken-in running shoes!

Question of the day….What is your most essential carry on item?

Happy Travels Everyone!

Love Your Legs

Happy Monday everyone! What a beautiful morning! With the cool temps and low humidity, I had such a great run this morning. I probably could have run for an hour. I only stopped because I needed to get ready for work. It’s my first day back after being out of the office for 6 work days!

I have to say that all of this running, combined with yoga and other strength exercises, has really improved the definition in my legs. But, my running legs have always been one of my best features (on most days at least). And, after 20 years of running, who wouldn’t appreciate her legs?

Love your legs and they will love you back!

Love your legs and they will love you back!

A British Woman and Her Legs

Unfortunately, there are many women who, for whatever reason, do not appreciate their legs and, in fact, even hate their legs. Some have varicose veins, others have an over abundance of cellulite. But there are even some women who may have very nice legs and still not be happy with them.

For example, a recent survey showed that 47 percent of British women were ashamed of their legs and 6 out of 10 are too embarrassed to wear skirts and dresses in public. This is so sad because, for most women, a little cardio each week, could greatly improve the shape of their legs and make them feel more confident about their overall appearance.

The study also found that women worry about their legs at least twice a day, and spend an hour and a half thinking about their legs, weight, and dress size. But I wonder, if they hate their legs so much, why don’t they spend more time improving their legs and less time thinking about how much they hate them?

Love Your Legs

Running is a great workout for your legs.

Running is a great workout for your legs.

Now my legs, like the rest of me, are far from perfect. I’ve acquired many leggy flaws over the years - I have a scar from a track spike, a slight weird pigment from a really bad sunburn acquired in Key West, and a 2-inch thin scar above my knee from a nail (ouch!). Although it would be nice to magically erase these flaws, I know that I can’t and have accepted them for what they are – a permanent reminder for how strong and active my legs are.

But even with these flaws, I can honestly say that I love my legs and try to take care of them as best as I can. Afterall, they are what get me from point A to point B every day and allow me to run miles and miles every week.

So, how do I take care of my legs? There are several things I do to make sure my legs stay healthy.

Jen’s Guide to Lovely Legs

  1. Move your legs* – Although I have mentioned this before, I can’t stress this enough. Running is a great workout for your legs. But walking, cycling, and really any exercise that makes your legs work can help build muscle and definition. Cross-training, including strengthening exercises, can also help work other muscle groups in your legs, give you more definition, and prevent injuries. So get out there and MOVE!
  2. Avoid scars – Whether it’s a mishap with a shower razor or a ding from the car door, I try to apply medication right away to avoid scarring. Although it doesn’t work every time, it has saved my legs on many occasions.
  3. Use sunscreen – Many of us may only use sunscreen when going to the beach or laying in the sun. But runners and their legs can get burned too. That’s why I apply sunscreen on my legs whenever I run in the late morning or afternoon.
  4. Moisterize – I have dry skin all year round but especially in the winter. Applying cream to my legs after a shower takes away that scaly look and gives them a sheen that accentuates the definition.
  5. Change your shoes – If your logging a lot of miles, either running or walking, make sure to buy new shoes before your old ones start showing major wear and tear. The standard rule is to change your shoes after logging 350-550 miles.
  6. Know my limits – Although running is my passion, I do set limits. If I am very sick, tired, or have a major injury, I’ll try walking or another cardio exercise. I’m also not afraid to take a day off just to give my legs a rest – because lord knows they need it!

Following these tips won’t guarantee that you’ll love your legs. But, like relationships, if you make your legs a priority, they will only get stronger.

Ciao!

Staycation Destination…Starbucks!

I am thrilled to report that I was able to enjoy my first Starbucks in nearly 3 weeks, and without going off of my restaurant diet! I owe this great delight to my sister Carrie who came into town for a visit. She and I went out to lunch yesterday and I treated using what was left over from my restaurant gift card. The lunch at Maggiano’s Little Italy – lasagna with meat sauce – was fantastic! Sorry, no photo to share.

Sisters and Starbucks

I was finally able to enjoy a Starbucks on my staycation!

I was finally able to enjoy a Starbucks on my staycation!

But the true highlight of my day came later in the afternoon. My sister bought me a tall mocha frappuccino as a treat. Let me tell you, it was one hell of a pick me up and a great way to end my vacation. Way to go sista friend! I drank the frozen concoction very slowly, savoring every drip. It tasted every bit as good as I remember.

Always room for dessert

After my tasty frap, I was so incredibly full that I wanted very little dinner. But, after eating a slight dinner, I had room left for the yummy chocolate banana swirl cake I made yesterday. By the way, my husband pointed out that the cake is actually labeled coffee cake, so it could be considered a breakfast item. Yes!

Chocolate banana swirl cake - delicious!

So, as I mentioned, today is my last day of vacation. As an update to my previous post 10 Ideas for a Great Staycation, I decided to share with you how many of my favorite vacation activities I was able to enjoy.

Of course, having a Starbucks didn’t hurt either!
