Bonjour! It’s been quite a while since I posted my travel schedule – maybe because I haven’t traveled since the beginning of December! Qui, I can’t believe it’s been nearly two months since I’ve flown anywhere, and for someone who has airline status, that makes me a little teary-eyed.

But fear not, this Bistro Chic has many reasons to bring out her travel chic wardrobe in the next few months. Just take a look at this fabulous itinerary ….

February – Tampa, Florida

March – San Diego, California

April – Orlando, Florida

May – Toronto, Ontario

May – New York, New York (possibly!)

June – Baltimore, Maryland

Sadly, a trip to Europe is not in my immediate future – so I must go on with a smile knowing that I can still have a European staycation at some point this year.

And where will your travels be taking you this year?

Bonjour! My husband and I and our two small children returned yesterday from a lovely, albeit whirlwind trip to downtown Chicago. Although we have stayed overnight in the city many times, this was our first annual Christmas sleepover in the Windy City.

Prior to our weekend getaway, we planned out the many things we would do as we played “tourist” in our own city. We did hit a few of the big sites – Water Tower Place, Michigan Avenue, American Girl, Macy’s, etc., but it was really the little things that made our stay memorable.

For instance, if you ever have the opportunity to stay overnight in Chicago, I highly recommend the Hotel Palomar – a fairly new hotel to Chicago, but a pro when it comes to the “little things”.

After looking at several hotels, we decided on the Palomar – a boutique hotel that is part of the Kimpton Hotel line. Having never stayed at a Kimpton Hotel, we were not sure what to expect, although the many amenities mentioned on the site had us very excited. Upon check-in, we realized that we were not staying at your basic hotel chain. Our children enjoyed hot chocolate and marshmallows in the lobby while I was at the front desk – so simple a gesture, but a huge bonus for kids who are chilly. The kids also received their very own goodie bags, complete with a winter activity book, pencils, a kaleidoscope, and more. And for the adults….. I was informed that because I was a Kimpton In Touch member, I could “raid the mini” bar (keeping it under $10) for free. This little amenity would prove to come in very handy at the end of our stay when only an $8 bag of gummy bears would suffice to calm slightly wild children.

The room was quite modern and well-appointed with very comfortable beds and….a goldfish? That’s right, we were very surprised to find a little friend in our room, a goldfish on loan from the hotel, that my children affectionately called “goldie”. The excitement grew as we opened the closet only to find animal print bathrobes for the whole family. Yes, there is nothing like seeing your children in leopard print robes, with goggles and flip flops on as they head to the pool. And speaking of the pool, the desk staff had the foresight to give us a room on the same floor as the pool, only a 20 ft walk from our room! They really must be mother’s helpers or Santa’s elves.

After walking all over the city in 25 degree temps, we were thrilled to find steaming cider back in the hotel lobby along with little bowls of specialty candies – lemonheads, jawbreakers, etc. Although we were not able to partake, the hotel did host a wine tasting reception in the early evening – which I’ve heard also include hot toddies and kiddie cocktails. There’s always next time, right?

The cold and endless walking finally got to us and we decided to have dinner in our room. And, because I said the secret password upon check-in (sorry, you’ll have to like them on Facebook to learn the secret word!), we were all treated to complimentary freshly baked chocolate chip cookies and milk in our hotel room at night. This was not only clever but a very thoughtful treat for an exhausted family.

At breakfast in the hotel’s restaurant Sable Kitchen & Bar, we enjoyed a hearty breakfast. But more important than the food, was the wonderful gesture by one of restaurant staff. After I returned from taking my 4 year old to the bathroom, I stopped in the lobby to grab two complimentary hot chocolates – one for me, and one for my daughter. Big mistake – my son was disappointed that I did not get him a drink as well and began to look very sad. A staff member, who was not our server, must have noticed my son’s face, when he appeared with an even bigger cup of hot chocolate with a marshmallow just for my son. The man said that he had a brother too and knew how important it was for brothers and sisters to have the “‘same” treats. Voila! That was all it took to put a smile on my son’s face and I didn’t even know the man’s name.

And so, with our luggage and a bag of gummy bears in hand, we headed down to retrieve our car from the valet. As the doormen opened the door for my children, one man smiled and said “well hello princess” and asked my daughter and son if they had fun during their stay. The smiles on their faces were answers enough – I was smiling too, all the way home.

Yesterday I returned from Washington, DC, after spending 3 days there for what will probably be my last business trip of 2011. As I mentioned before, I’ve been to Washington many times, mostly on business. However, this was my first time visiting the Capitol during the holidays. After spending a day and a half in meetings, I determined to see something – anything – Christmasy, and not just the decorated tree in the hotel lobby.

First stop, Le Pain Quotidien, a cute little French cafe where my colleagues and I were in search of a snack and something warm to drink before we embarked on our Washington Christmas adventure….

Next, it was about a mile walk to view the National Christmas Tree, standing in front of the White House Ellipse. Although the tree and decorations were a bit underwhelming, it was quite festive to listen to Christmas Carols and watch the toy trains go round and round.

We then headed to a holiday tour of historic homes, which included Anderson House, a beautiful turn-of-the century mansion.

All four of the houses we toured were decked out in period holiday decor, live festive music, and light refreshments. Woodrow Wilson House also showcased an interactive exhibit featuring artifacts from the early 1900s, including an old radio microphone, period clothing, and a vacuum cleaner.

My personal favorite was a photo of King Edward VIII (ie. the English King who abdicated his throne to marry an American divorcee a la King’s Speech)…

As most of you know, I love all things Victorian/Olde English, yet seeing the historic homes made me even more nostalgic for an era that I will never see. It also let me experience Washington in a way I never had, which made my holidays and my business trip seem a little brighter – even without the snow.

Fresh off of my trip to Maui, this Bistro Chic girl is headed back to the friendly skies later (with status!) this week for my second Fall/Winter excursion and my 12th trip of the year – this time to Washington, DC. Although I’ve been to the Capitol many times, I’ve never visited DC during the holidays. Like any big city, Washington, DC, has many holiday events and sites for locals and tourists to enjoy. Yet there are also a few distinct experiences that lend themselves to our beautiful Capitol city.

The National Christmas Tree - In 1923, President Calvin Coolidge was the first US President to light the 48 foot National Christmas Tree located in the Ellipse, a short walk from the White House. After 89 years, the lighting of the National Christmas Tree is a tradition that still remains and is one of the most memorable moments of the holiday season in the US.

Zoo Lights at the National Zoo - The National Zoo displays thousands of sparkling lights featuring sculptures of many of the Zoo’s most popular animals, including giant pandas, Asian elephants, and a sea lion. Visitors can also enjoy winter-themed crafts, ice sculpting demonstrations, choral groups, and storytellers. Best of all – the zoo and the lights festival are free!

Candlelight Tour of Historic Homes - Visitors can stop by historic homes, including Mount Vernon and Montpellier Mansion, for a candlelight tour, festive holiday decor, carol singing, and more.

If you would have told me a year ago that I would have elite status on a major airline, I wouldn’t have believed you. But that, my fellow traveling friends, is exactly what I have finally earned 11 months and 11 trips later.

So how do I benefit from having the first level of “status”? Good question.

Aside from all of the arbitrary benefits (ie. priority check-in and boarding on Alaska Airlines), there are three benefits which definitely have purpose:

Priority Security and Boarding Privileges: No longer do I have to wait in the long line at security or wonder if my carry on bag will have a place in the overhead bin. These may seem like incidentals to most, but tell that to someone who nearly missed her flight because she had to go through “regular” security.

Same Day Standby: This allows me to standby for a different flight on the same day without incurring a fee – truly important for business travelers who would do just about anything to get home early after a long day of meetings.

No Checked Baggage Fee: That’s right! No more fees for my two checked bags – at least for the next year. Oh what I wouldn’t have given to have this little perk when I went to Vancouver last November.

As you can see, having the lowest level of status on an airline has merely minor perks – but having bragging rights can not be overrated.

For a seasoned traveler, I’ve come to expect certain amenities from hotels and resorts where I lodge. Good service, clean hotel rooms, and decent food choices are top on my list for just about any place I stay, for work or play. When you think about it, these factors really aren’t amenities, but something that any good hotel or resort should deliver if it expects to attract repeat customers.

But it takes more than just the “expected” to make me return to a hotel or resort over and over. For me, hotels and resorts that go above and beyond the wake-up call of duty deserve my repeat business and, subsequently, kudos in my articles.

For instance, 10 years ago I spent 10 days at the Four Seasons Wailea, Maui, Hawaii, for my honeymoon. No amount of wedding pampering can even compare to that I received at the Four Seasons. Now, 10 years later, I returned to the same resort for my anniversary, only to find the Four Seasons even more extraordinary than before.

As I remembered, the Four Seasons provided many standard amenities that would be expected for good hotels. What surprised me more – 10 years ago and still today – were all of the little things that were unexpected. And, it is all of these little things that sets the Four Seasons apart from any other hotel or resort chain:

The Little Things: What Makes a Good Hotel Great

Welcome Home – Upon checking in at the FS front desk, a hostess presented us with a fresh flower lei (a beaded lei for my husband), fresh citrus water, and a pineapple treat. We also received chilled lavender towels to refresh us after a long flight. This special attention upon arrival made us feel like we were being welcomed home after a long time away.

Special Occasions – It is not unusual for a hotel to acknowledge an anniversary; however, the FS made our anniversary extra special with little touches. After receiving a warm congratulations from the front desk staff, we were delighted to find an anniversary card signed by several hotel staff in our room. Later that day, we returned to our room to find a single red rose, two wine glasses, and yet another personalized card with a note pointing us to the small fridge that held a bottle of Domaine Carneros champagne.

Perk up and Refresh – Throughout our stay, I was extremely pleased with the complimentary refreshments provided by the resort, including coffee/tea and lemon-infused water stations around the resort, and, my favorite, Nespresso cafe in the business center!

Bathroom Bliss – Walking into our huge bathroom was like walking into L’Occitane heaven – shampoo, conditioner, body wash, after sun cream for soothing skin, hand and body bar soap – everything L’Occitane. Plus, for added entertainment, there was a built-in wall radio with preselected stations, including Hawaiian music. And, it was not only our bathroom that had extra touches. Every bathroom around the resort displayed cloth/fabric, not paper towels, for hand drying. Now I realize that this may not be “green” by today’s standards, but it is definitely classy.

Room with (more than) a View – Aside from the beautiful bathroom, the actual ocean view room we stayed in was large and gorgeous with calming colors and tasteful decor, not to mention cozy blankets and throw pillows. It made me feel like I was coming home to an actual bedroom and not just a hotel room.

Beyond the Balcony – Ample amenities could be found around the resort which was a mix of lush tropical flowers and greenery and well-manicured lawns. Although we did not partake in many of the complimentary activities, guests could enjoy 1 hour of snorkeling a day, outrigger canoing, yoga on the beach, wellness classes/speakers, and more – all complimentary.

Sounds of Serenity – The FS Serenity Pool was not built when my husband and I were there 10 years ago. The new addition was by far the BEST new feature of the resort! Not only was the pool a serene gem overlooking the beach, but it was built with adults in mind. The sounds of the nearby waterfall and the bubbling of the pool waters – from both the hot tub and the “cool” bubbles – provided a white noise that cancelled out others’ conversations and bar noise. An infinity-edge pool overlooking the ocean and swim up bar added an even more glamorous touch to this adults-only section. Furthermore, staff hand delivered pool-side amenities, including cucumbers for your eyes, cold washcloths, evian water spritzes, and cool treats such as watermelon and icy pops.

Service, Service, Service – If there is one thing the Four Seasons does better than any hotel chain it would have to be service – especially when it comes to hotel rooms. Not only was the housekeeping staff discreet (rarely saw or heard them in the hall), they provided top-notch service, not once, but twice a day. After a morning of laying by the pool, we would return to the room to find it not only cleaned, but our toiletries/clothes organized. During turndown service in the evening, staff cleaned our room yet again, giving us fresh towels, laying out slippers by each side of the bed, and providing us with fresh towels, more bottled water, and a list of the following day’s activities. The FS staff is also known for personalized service and their attention to detail. When my husband unknowingly left $32 in his shorts he sent to the hotel dry cleaning service, we received a call from security letting us know that they would drop it off to our room – which they promptly did. When making dinner reservations at a restaurant off property, the concierge desk left a note in our room giving us directions, reservation information, and a menu with hand-written notes about the signature dishes – not to mention another anniversary wish. Finally, no matter where we went, we were acknowledged in some way by the staff – many times by our names, even by the pool staff who seemed to have to memorized dozens of names each day.

Sweet Endings – After a relaxing and magical stay at the FS Wailea, we said our last goodbyes to the resort staff and headed out to the valet area for our car. We were, once again, amazed to find a map with directions to the airport, along with a thank you note, a bag of jelly belly candies, and bottled water for the drive. This was a fantastic finishing touch that made me smile, even as I was leaving this gorgeous place.

As you can see, from arrival to departure, the Four Seasons took care of my husband and I like no other resort can. The hotel truly embodies what it means to be a great hotel and anything but ordinary. Although I won’t be able to afford another Four Seasons stay for quite some time (it may take 10 more years to save!), it was worth every penny and more.

Mahalo Four Seasons Wailea for another memorable trip, 10 years in the making.

This is a guest post by Scott. While Jen is working in Hawaii, I get to do the fun exploring and she asked me to post on Bistro Chic.

Enthusiasm is contagious.

On Wednesday, I went for a Mountain Biking adventure. Regular readers may remember, that I participate in triathlons. So, I ride road bikes. I have never really mountain biked. I figured what a better way to see the beautiful scenery than to ride up and down a valley looking out at the ocean.

Just like the other tours, the van picked me up at tapa tower bus depot. Everyone is usually quiet with the early morning pick-up times. People keep to themselves. For surfing and kayaking, there were many more females than males.

For this mountain bike tour, it was 5 guys and 1 lady. When I got on the van, there was a guy named Greg who was chatty with excitement. Not only that, he brought his own helmet and a bike mount camera. Greg was giddy about the island views. His enthusiasm set the tone for the entire trip. In addition, everyone was super friendly and started introducing themselves right away. One guy from Vancouver, Canada. One guy from Australia. The couple was from California. Greg was from Virginia Beach. This trip was different from the start.

We drove to a working cattle farm, Kualoa Ranch.

If you have watched: Lost, Jurassic Park, 50 First Dates, Pearl Harbor. Windtalkers, or Hawaii 5-0. Then it’s likely you have seen parts of the ranch as many of the scenes were filmed on the location. The ranch is kind enough to allow mountain biking tours.

We first got on the bikes and visited a World War 2 bunker. It was very interesting.

For most of the first part of the ride, we rode on Jeep and ATV roads.

After every twist and turn in the road, it felt like I was looking at a new painting. All the participants were taking different pictures of the same mountains. It was phenomenal.

We road our bikes into the valley and saw all sorts of different movie set remnants.

We even got to explore some ancient Hawaii temple ruins.

Okay. That isn’t ruins, but it is a set for a new Journey to the Center of the Earth movie. After we rode for a bit, we hopped on some single track which is much more technical.

We rode different kinds of terrain. There were hidden rocks all over the track.

I will admit it. I fell off the bike a few times and the family jewels were often in peril. I got off the bike and walked a bit too due to some of the steep rocky terrain and my inexperience. I’m glad I did. I escaped with only bumps, scrapes, and bruises. The female rider in the group was not so lucky. She fell off her bike in some rocky terrain and had to go to the hospital. The ambulance guys said the early diagnosis was a compound fracture. I hope she and her male companion are doing okay. It really put a damper on the rest of the ride.

Luckily for them and for us, the fall was near the end.

When we finished the ride, we packed up the bikes and had sandwich lunch with the wild chickens. Yaay: No mayo this time!

The bus ride back was equally adventurous. There were van drivers performing singing telegrams, strange women running alongside, and great hiking stories all mixed-in with a real terrible mix-tape.

Oahu is just plain gorgeous. I will miss it.

This concludes the Mr. Bistrochic Oahu adventure series. I’m excited for my next adventure: some quiet rest and relaxation on Maui. Here’s a Maui sunset and a Maui preview photo to help you relax too!

Until next time, Aloha & Mahalo!

This is a guest post by Scott. While Jen is working in Hawaii, I get to do the fun exploring and she asked me to post Monday. Since my adventures were so well received, I decided to return for a Bistro Chic bonus post.

When my adventures left off, I was venturing out for Japanese food.

Since, I spent Monday morning in the ocean. Monday afternoon, I went for a llittle beach photo walking. I walked the coastline from my hotel to the base of diamond head mountain.

People watching was fascinating. Saw all sorts of magical locations.

What a wonderful Monday! I don’t think I will ever get tired of Hawaiian sunsets.

Monday evening, we went for an exquisite dinner at Morimoto’s. Highly recommend the ishi yaki buri bop. Of course, since it was more a business dinner, I refrained from photos. They cooked my yellowtail fish table-side with a 400° stone bowl. The restaurant was located in a modern hotel that had full-sized mattress-like-beds for sun chaise chairs. I could have just slept there for the evening. It was very modern chic.

On Tuesday, I headed out for some sea kayaking. The bus depot at the hotel was a bustling people moving center.

A LOL moment in the van

I was picked up by the kayak shuttle and after a few stops, we headed up & down a mountain on our way to Kailua Bay, Oahu.

Since I had time to kill on my van ride, I slipped into working mode. I started to read my emails on my phone. Tuesday happens to be a day where I have a regular meeting with a client to discuss our projects. I received an email with the meeting notes and action items. So of course, I started thinking what projects needed to be done next and what tasks were on my plate.

I don’t think I will violate any NDA’s if I share the emailed notes I received:

Please review task list and ensure yours are complete for our next meeting.

Tasks
1) Scott……enjoy a Mai Tai on a Hawaiian beach with Jen

2) Scott …..Repeat task 1

It was the perfect email for me at the perfect time!

If you are open to them, Lessons can be learned and reinforced by anyone at anytime.

Thanks to my client for the gentle reminder and reinforcing the lesson to work hard & play hard. Time away helps recharge the brain and provides a great way to generate new ideas.

We should step away sometimes even to daydream about Paris, Hawaii, or some other travel destination. All work and no play makes you a dull boy or girl.

Lesson 1: Work Hard & Play Hard!

Heeding the moment, I immediately shut off my phone and reengaged with the scenery. I was able to catch some wonderful views of the thousands of year old Caldera that formed Oahu.

We arrived at the Kayak home base to sign papers, waivers, and go through a quick safety check.

They unloaded the sea kayaks by the beach, and we went through a paddling instruction. My guide tried his best to be funny. It only worked in that it was so off the wall and almost sarcastic. He tried to use some new-age-y zen comparisons like comparing the Ocean to the book Who Moved My Cheese.

Now, I went sea kayaking one time about ten years ago. I found it rather easy to do. So, when I got on my kayak, I did not expect to flip over immediately which is exactly what I did about a half dozen times.

They gave me a red kayak that was sized for a female As soon as I tried to paddle, my weight would shift and flip into the ocean.

Of course, I was determined to kayak. So, I finally got to a point where I was settled and was able to stroke the paddle while keeping my body still. We kayaked for about 50 to 100 meters, and they asked me to switch kayaks with a girl who had a blue boy-sized kayak.

What a difference!

Here’s how you can experience the same feeling: at your local pool, take your adult-sized body and jump on a child-sized water raft.

Lesson 2: Kayaks come in different sizes for a reason.

So, we’re off headed for the Mokulua Islands about 4 kilometers away.

The wind and the waves were a little choppier than I expected. It was fun being on the ocean in a kayak. The rhythmic pattern of paddling had a calming effect which almost made me understood the guide’s zen talk.

We arrived on the island and hiked to a tide pool called Queen’s Bath. We were able to jump in the tide pool for some fun photos. As I was preparing for my swim, I dropped my phone into a tiny little pool.

Lesson 3: Don’t open water tight bags over water on rocky terrain, you never know what might slip into the water.

Luckily, I pulled it out quick enough that the camera still worked.

As I crawled out of the tide pool, I cut my fingers on the a’a rock. A’a rock is a sharp pointy basaltic igneous rock.

(See Mom & Dad, I did learn something with my Geology degree.)

Lesson 4: Soft water logged hands and sharp objects don’t mix.

If I was at home, I’d probably, be pretty mad. I had a water-logged phone that may not work, and the cuts on my hands enough where there’s blood on my shirt.

Yet, I didn’t really care. I was in vacation mode. All I really wanted was lunch. I opened the bag lunch they provided to find a Ham sandwich with mayonnaise. Good Grief! I hate mayo.

Picture this:
I’m sitting on the rock looking at my water-logged phone with bloodied hands eating a Subway Ham sandwich with mayo that I hate.

Thinking, thinking, thinking. Thinking. Anger starting to rise. Pulse quickening. Then the roar of the ocean tumbling back and forth swept the worries away as I peered off in the ocean with this view:

Lesson 6: Stop and enjoy the view no matter the circumstances.

As we kayaked home, about 5 to 10 meters from me, a sea turtle popped up to ask if I learned my lessons today.

I smiled and rowed on.

Maholo and Aloha.

This is a guest post by Scott. While Jen is working in Hawaii, I get to do the fun exploring and she asked me to post today. Of course, how can I turn her down.

I arrived to our hotel and we have a wonderful view of DiamondHead Crater.

I had a wonderful night listening to Hawaiian music. Then I woke up early to go surfing. It was awesome! We went to a beach in a campsite that used to be a military base.

My surf school was the only people on the beach. It was like we had a private location.

After coming back from surfing, I had a little text conversation with Jen. Here’s a snippet:

Mr BistroChic: I’m going for a walk and for lunch. Is it wrong to go to buffalo wild wings in Hawaii?

Ms. BistroChic: Yes.

What can I say, I had a hankering for beer and wings. However, when I travel, I do like to try new places and experience local food. So, I went exploring. I figured being in Hawaii, I should be able to find some authentic Japanese food. I was not disappointed. I went to a cute place called Ginza Bairin. Now, I have never had authentic Japanese food unless you can call eating at Epcot’s Japanese restaurant authentic. I did not know what to expect.

I looked around to see how other people were eating trying not to look too much the outsider. Of course, I am in a tourist area of Oahu so it’s not really that important. The menu was primarily in Japanese with English subtitles. I asked my server what to eat. She recommended a few things. I picked the pork tenderloin. It was fabulous.

Let me back up a bit. First they bring out some sesame seeds that you grind yourself.

Then, you take this sauce and put in the bowl for a dip for the pork.

My meal was good. Although, I’m not a fan of miso soup. Everything else tasted great. The service was wonderful.

So, I’m off for another adventure. A little kayaking on Tuesday and then mountain biking on Wednesday. Can’t wait.

In the meantime, Aloha!
