Royal Wedding Afternoon Tea

Prince William and Kate Wedding Photo

Nearly 30 years ago, I remember sitting in the living room of my parents’ house anxiously awaiting a once in a lifetime event. It was 1981 and my mother, who was quite fond of the British Royal Family, had turned the television on to watch Lady Diana Spencer and Prince Charles marry at Westminster Abbey. Although I was too young at the time to remember most of the wedding, I vividly remember seeing Diana walk down the aisle with her huge fairytale dress, complete with a never-ending train. If I didn’t want to be a princess before that day, I sure did after that!

Thirty years later, it’s hard not be intrigued by the upcoming fairytale wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton on Friday, April 29. Whispers of dress designers, canapes, and pomp and circumstance have the media in a frenzy and most British Royal-loving Americans equally excited. And with all the fanfare that will soon be broadcast worldwide, it really is a historical day to be celebrated and experienced around the world.

Even if you are not one of the few hundred people invited to the Royal Wedding, you can still celebrate British style by hosting your very own afternoon tea. Although the “rules” for British afternoon tea have been Americanized, or shall we say “relaxed” in recent years, traditional afternoon tea often includes:

Traditional Afternoon Tea

  • Savories: Mini egg tarts (similar to quiche) and/or sandwiches, such as cucumbers with spiced cream cheese, or diced ham, onion, and cheddar. Remember, no crusts please!
  • Breads: Sweet breads, scones, biscuits, biscotti, or shortbread – all served with an assortment of jams, lemon curd and/or clotted cream (or heavy whipping cream).
  • Sweets: Cakes, petit fours, macarons, madeleines, fruit tarts, fudge or other delicate candy,
  • Assorted teas: Any tea that you fancy can be served, but some of the traditional tea favorites are English Breakfast, Earl Grey, Mint, Lemon, and Green tea. Milk or cream, sugar cubes, and lemon slices should be served alongside tea.

Whatever you choose to serve, remember to use the best tea cups and pots that you have, your fanciest serving dishes, and real napkins –  then eat, drink, and toast to Will and Kate!

Ciao!

A French-Themed Birthday

Joyeux anniversaire to me! Although today was my actual birthday, in our family we celebrate birthdays over an entire weekend so I’ve had 3 days full of birthday surprises and wishes. While most people would celebrate a birthday in a typical American fashion – with a birthday cake and going out to dinner – I asked for a more unique birthday celebration – a French-themed birthday!

How fortunate I am to have a family who obliges my Francophile personality. Just look at all of the lovely French things I did:

  1. Was surprised with fresh flowers and fresh French bread at dinner
  2. Enjoyed a lovely French wine – Pouilly-Fuisse
  3. Indulged in a French breakfast treat – le croissant!
  4. Dined at a chic Bistro – bon appetit
  5. Read a brand new French book – Parisian Chic. It’s a real must for anyone who loves French style!
  6. Savored a French espresso (or 2, or 3, but who’s keeping track, right?)
  7. Listened to French music a la Paris Combo and Pink Martini
  8. Painted my nails with You Don’t Know Jacques from OPI

And now Bistro Chic readers – How do you plan to spend your birthday?

Ciao!

Joie de Vivre in Epcot’s France

When I was first introduced to the book French Women Don’t Get Fat six years ago, I was not only enamored by the book’s topic, but completely fell in love with the book’s cover art. I immediately searched for the artist – R. Nichols – and found that he not only did Mireille Guiliano’s first book cover (and subsequent book covers) but he also designed stationary, note cards, luggage tags and more. Nichols’ distinct design is classy with clean, clear cut lines, yet carries a bit of whimsy via bold colors and fanciful settings – tres chic!

Fast forward to my recent trip to Disney World….I was beckoned by Epcot’s France to stop in and peruse the pastisserie – as I always do when I’m in a faux foreign country – as well as the gift shops. I was, at first, tempted to buy a beret, but decided that buying a beret in Epcot’s France was simply not the same as buying it from the actual country. Smart move. I continued to browse the shop and came across the books and stationary section. My gaze was immediately drawn to that unmistakable book cover by R. Nichols – that’s right, French Women Don’t Get Fat was staring at me, almost begging me to look closer. And, to my surprise, as I took a closer look, I noticed a whole card section dedicated to the art work of R. Nichols, and all with a French theme! It was truly a joie de vivre moment right in Disney World. Merci, merci, merci Disney and R. Nichols!

Obviously, it took a matter of seconds for me to select my four new cards and pay for them, the whole time smiling, feeling like I had found a wonderful treasure. When I returned from my trip, I ventured onto Nichols’ site once more to see if there were more of the “Disney” cards to order, but unfortunately not. However, the artist has designed many similar cards with French/European/Travel themes – definitely worth checking out, especially if you love France and paper as much as I do.

Ciao!
