Do French Women Diet?

I’ve written time and time again about the French paradox, the idea that the French can eat high fat foods at every meal and still manage to maintain a healthy weight. This concept was further popularized in the 2004 book French Women Don’t Get Fat, by Mireille Guiliano. The author describes the secret to a French woman’s slimness is not only that she does not diet, but that her weight is managed by how she eats, what she eats, and, most importantly, her healthy relationship with food.

But could the French paradox and the idea that French women don’t get fat be mere myths? They may just be. According to recent reports, 15% of French women are obese and a further 26% are overweight. The reports goes on to say that in the past 12 years, the average French person has put on almost 7 lbs and almost 2 inches around the waist, due in part to the change in eating habits in towns and cities and the increasing prevalence of fast food.

More recently, an article in the Times London describes how French women DO in fact diet to either lose weight or to maintain their slim figures. The Dukan Diet, created by French physician Dr Pierre Dukan and detailed in his best-seller book of the same name, is said to be used by more than 1.5 million French women. The diet, which will be launched in the UK next month, is similar to the Akins diet (high protein, low carb), but touts a one day on, one day off approach to dieting, while eventually working up to a 1 day of, six days off approach.

So, is the idea that French women don’t diet and don’t get fat a myth? Hmm…only time will tell. Although, I wonder what Mireille Guiliano has to say about this new information. Stay tuned to find out!

How to Order From a French Menu

Have you ever been to a French restaurant and had no clue what to order because everything was in French?  If you’ve been to France, particularly outside of Paris, this probably has happened to you. Luckily, in the US, French restaurants take pity on us non-French speaking Francophiles and put most of the menu choices in English.

However, even in these Americanized French restaurants, French words are still used to describe many of the dishes that are written in English. So you may see a dish that says chicken à la king and think – great – chicken, at least I know it’s poultry. But, do you really know how it’s prepared? Maybe not, because the description of the dish is full of French descriptors. These petit and unfamiliar words and phrases may leave you pleasantly surprised or a tad bitter about your menu selection. To avoid the latter, you can either:

  • A. Ask your server for a quick French lesson prior to ordering and risk the classic French eye-roll because you are so American; or
  • B. Become familiar with a few French menu words and phrases that will help you make an intelligent selection for your meal – oui oui!

Just in case you opt for B, here are a few French menu phrases to get you started…

15 Words/Phrases on a French Menu

  1. à la – Meaning “in the style of”
  2. Citron – lemon or citrus flavor
  3. Frite – fried, ie pommes frites = French Fries
  4. Au povre – peppered or in a pepper sauce
  5. Amandine – cooked or coated with almonds
  6. Coulis – a thick sauce made with one ingredient, ie raspberry coulis
  7. Crème FraÎche – a slightly sour cream, with the richness of a whipping cream, but the tangy flavor of sour cream
  8. Crêpes – very thin pancakes that can be sweet or savory
  9. Croûte – encrusted or in a pastry crust
  10. Entremet – dessert
  11. Les Plats Principaux – main plates or entrees

Viva La Food Revolution!

Obesity is major issue, not just in the United States, but in the United Kingdom.

In response to this epidemic, British Chef Jamie Oliver has recently undertaken a huge initiative – to reduce obesity in the US and the UK by promoting better food in schools. Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution, which is now airing on ABC on Friday evenings, takes a look at how unhealthy cities, schools, and communities are contributing to their obesity and death rates because of the food that they eat. As part of the Food Revolution, Jamie and his crew are traveling around the US (they’ve already toured the UK) to educate communities on how to make better food choices through knowledge of what food is made of, where it comes from, and how to cook healthier meals.

And Jamie isn’t stopping there! He’s encouraging everyone to start their own food revolution in their own homes, schools, and communities. On Jamie’s site, you can:

I’ve signed the petition. Have you?

A Bistro Chic Birthday

Bonjour and Joyeux Anniversaire to me! That’s Happy Birthday of course!

Yes, my birthday was yesterday. And, in our house, birthdays that fall on the weekend turn into a weekend-long birthday celebration. Sometimes there are parties. Sometimes there are small dinners. Other times, there is little fanfare, but rather a celebration of relaxation and family that is often lost in the day-to-day activities of work and responsibilities.

Spa candles

So how did I celebrate my birthday weekend? With a little bit of this and a little bit of that:

  • Relaxation – On Saturday, the day before my birthday, I received a wonderful pedicure from my mother-in-law (who moonlights as a nail technician!) Although les enfants were still running amok, the pedicure was quite relaxing, especially because I was sitting on the couch for a hour not having to do a thing! Another part of my relaxing weekend was going for a 7-mile run on Sunday, my actual birthday. Some of you may not think running is relaxing, but again, anytime I have an hour to myself, it’s relaxing!
  • Indulgence – Ok, where do I start? My father-in-law, a master baker (I think he own a patisserie in a previous life!), knows that I love all things lemon. On Saturday, he surprised me by baking a lemon chiffon cake with raspberry cream – delicious! The next morning my husband and the kids went to the local bakery and picked up several baked treats for breakfast. I arrived home from my run to yummy sites and smells, followed by chocolate kisses from the kids. Finally, after a long birthday Sunday, I topped off my indulgences with a tart frozen yogurt from a local froyo cafe. Expensive, but well worth it!
  • Family Time – On Saturday, I bonded with my 2 1/2 year old daugher as we shared a breakfast of French bread, brie, and raspberry preserves – plus a juicy green pear and English Breakfast tea with cream. I must also add that she was wearing her very pink tutu in preparation for the afternoon Fancy Nancy Party that we attended. So chic, at such a young age – she really must be my daughter. On Sunday, we attended my son’s rousing soccer game, followed by a quick trip to the zoo in downtown Chicago. In true Bistro Chic Fashion, we dined at a French Bistro- Mon Ami Gabi – for dinner, where I had an amazing asparagus and leek soup, followed by a frisee salad with bacon and a poached egg.
  • Little Surprises – And now for the good stuff! I received several birthday greetings via FB, email, etc. some expected, and some very unexpected – but all lovely and very welcome! I also received a special birthday gift from Sephora – France’s gift to the mass-cosmetics world. Ooh la la – nothing like receiving a fancy and free beauty gift on your birthday. If you want a free Sephora treat on your birthday, just sign up for the Sephora Rewards Program. And speaking of free, I also received a free travel size Bath and Body Works hand cream – citrus of course! The free cream was not really a birthday gift, but it was still a nice free birthday treat! But wait, what was my very favorite birthday surprise? The homemade cards from mes enfants – complete with an alien spaceship with me inside. Maybe they are trying to tell me something?

Whew! For a low-key birthday, I actually did quite  a lot!

Bistro Chic Travel Forecast – Looks like next week will be much warmer and sunnier week for me! I’m headed to Austin, TX, on another business trip. I may just, accidentally, stumble upon a few French macarons and a French hot chocolate – but that will be our little secret, mes amis!

Ciao!

French Breakfast Al Fresco

Summer is still two months away, yet today, we enjoyed summer-like weather in Chicago. There is something so fresh and carefree about waking up to a sunny and warm morning. It nearly always puts me in a good mood and adds a little more enjoyment to my morning routine. Today was even more special because the nice weather meant I was able to enjoy my first al fresco breakfast of the season…

For those of you who don’t know, yesterday was Mireille Guiliano’s birthday. Her name may not ring a bell to you but Guiliano is the author of French Women Don’t Get Fat, one of my all-time favorite nonfiction books. In honor of Guiliano’s bday, I enjoyed a lovely French breakfast on my French terrace (aka my front porch), which included:

  • A few slices of French bread
  • Bonne Maman raspberry preserves
  • Brie
  • Walnuts
  • A fresh peach

Very relaxing, albeit for 10 minutes. It would have been even more relaxing if I didn’t have to get the kids to daycare and then head off to work. Ahh, what we do to make money.

By the way, my birthday is on Sunday and I’m hoping to celebrate in a very Bistro Chic way. Curious, are you? Check back on Monday to find out what I did!
